June 9th marked the sixth anniversary of the passing of Dr. Todd Mainprize, a visionary neurosurgeon, scientist, and leader whose work transformed the future of brain cancer treatment.
When we hear about focused ultrasound being used to treat brain tumours, it is important to remember that Dr. Mainprize was the first in the world to make that vision a reality. His contributions continue to inspire researchers, clinicians, advocates, and families, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.
Today, one of the greatest challenges we face is identifying effective therapies capable of destroying these devastating cancers once the blood-brain barrier has been opened. Dr. Mainprize helped solve one of neuro-oncology's most significant obstacles - getting treatments into the brain. It is now up to the research community to build on that foundation and develop the therapies that will ultimately improve survival and save lives.
ABOUT DR.TODD MAINPRIZE
As Division Head of Neurosurgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, Dr. Mainprize achieved what many once thought impossible. In 2015, he became the first physician in the world to safely open the blood-brain barrier using focused ultrasound (FUS) in a brain tumour patient, a landmark breakthrough that paved the way for delivering chemotherapy and other therapies directly to brain tumours. His pioneering work revolutionized the field of neuro-oncology and continues to shape treatment approaches around the world.
Angela Scalisi, Chair of Brain Cancer Canada, shared:
“Dr. Mainprize's loss was profound for the neuro-oncology community and for everyone fortunate enough to know him. Today, we remember not only an exceptional physician and researcher, but a pioneer whose vision changed what was possible for brain cancer patients. His groundbreaking work opened the door to new treatment strategies and gave hope to families facing some of the most devastating diagnoses.
I also hope his family understands the extraordinary and life-changing impact he had and continues to have on the brain tumour community. His legacy extends far beyond the operating room and the laboratory. Because of his courage, sacrifices, and determination to challenge the impossible, countless patients and families have benefited from advances that continue to shape the future of brain cancer treatment."
Six years later, his legacy of innovation, leadership, and compassion continues to drive progress in neuro-oncology and bring hope to patients and families around the world.
Remembering Dr. Mainprize matters because his legacy lives on in every patient who benefits from the discoveries he helped advance.
