Changes are coming to Hamilton’s recycling program as of Tuesday, April 1st.

National not-for-profit organization Circular Materials will now operate the previously city-led blue box program in Hamilton as part of Ontario’s efforts to “shift responsibility for recycling operations and costs to paper and packaging producers.”

From April 1st until December 31st, 2025, no changes will be made to the city’s current curbside collection program, with two-stream recycling, schedules, and accepted materials remaining the same.

As of April 1st, residents will no longer be able to drop off bulky, rigid plastic items at community recycling centres or transfer stations and must now be treated as garbage or scheduled for bulk pickup.

Blue boxes will also no longer be available at community recycling centres, municipal service centres, or at Hamilton City Hall. Residents requiring blue boxes will need to purchase them from a retail store.

Starting on January 1st, 2026, Circular Materials will introduce a new standardized list of recyclable items across Ontario. This may include changes to what can and cannot be recycled in Hamilton. Changes may also occur for collection days and methods of collection.
