Does your Service Dog in Training seem altogether too distracted?

In my experience, the key to a resilient Service Dog Team is understanding the 𝗬𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘀-𝗗𝗼𝗱𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗟𝗮𝘄, which I like to call the "Goldilocks Rule" of arousal. This law showed me that a dog needs an optimal level of alertness for peak performance.

𝗟𝗼𝘄 𝗔𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗹: I notice the dog becomes unmotivated, which leads to a slump—for example, missing an Alert task.

𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗔𝗿𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗮𝗹: I’ve seen dogs get over-stimulated, causing a collapse in engagement, such as failing a Retrieval task in public.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁: This is what I aim for...optimal focus for processing new skills, maintaining emotional regulation in public, and executing fluent, automatic responses during a crisis like Grounding.

I use this approach to consistently build cooperative engagement across all training stages of my Service Dog Team Success program.
