Canada’s Spousal Sponsorship program is designed to keep families together by allowing Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for permanent residency. The program is divided into two streams: inland sponsorship (for partners currently living together in Canada) and outland sponsorship (for partners living outside Canada). Applicants must demonstrate that their relationship is genuine and meet financial criteria to support their partner. Once approved, the sponsored spouse or partner enjoys the same rights and benefits as other permanent residents, including access to healthcare, social benefits, and the ability to work and live anywhere in Canada. The process typically takes about 12 months, but times can vary depending on individual cases.

New data from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC) indicates a significant rise in the demand for temporary foreign workers (TFWs) across various Canadian industries. In 2023, nearly 240,000 TFWs were approved to work in Canada, more than doubling from five years ago. Key industries such as healthcare, food services, and construction have experienced the highest increases in TFW approvals, driven by persistent labour shortages and the need for skilled workers. This trend underscores Canada’s growing reliance on TFWs to support its economic stability and growth.
