Steps to moving to GA4 [📍 Save for later]
If you have started to hear the whispers of the new version that was recently released and are starting to make plans to transition over, then this post is for you.
GA4 is out and soon enough you'll need to start the process of moving to the new version.
The good news is that you have time. yay!!
But, unlike the older version of GA (aka Universal Analytics) there are more steps involved in setting it up and so it's not a matter of switching over and walking away.
When should you switch over?
As soon as you can. Mainly because you wont be collecting any data in your GA4 account until you do.
BUT
You shouldn't give up on your Universal Analytics account just yet.
Here are the high level steps to making the transition to GA4:
1. Create your GA4 account using the easy GA4 Set Up Assistant found in your Google Analytics property.
2. Wait for enough data to be collected in your new GA4 property to be able to compare your high level metrics between Universal and GA4. EX. Look at your Visits, Users by traffic sources at least, for ecommerce sites, check your sales metrics.
3. Clean up your data in GA4 or complete any set up or optimization needed. For example do you need to recreate Goals in GA4.
4. Pull your important metrics from both Universal and GA4 to compare the difference. You should expect slight variations between the two as the measurement foundations have changed slightly. Big differences need to be investigated.
5. Recreate any reports that you currently have in Universal GA using GA4 data. Run these in parallel for at least 3 months (depending on the size of your traffic).
6. Once you're happy with the numbers, choose a clean cut off data to transition 100% to GA4. Ex. Start of a month, a quarter or even start of 2022.

Any day is a great day to look at your data.
You don't have to wait for the start of a month, for your business to have grown to a certain point or for when you're actively marketing your business.
You can start today. As you are.
In fact, the earlier you start, the faster you'll build the habit of looking at your data.
Also, you wont really know what you need to be looking at specifically for your business until you start playing around.
So, go ahead and start today.
Log into your Google Analytics or whatever platform you're using to understand your website + marketing performance and take a look around.
Just look around to see what data you get. Then start thinking about what metrics you're going to look at on monthly basis (hint: see my previous posts)
Have fun and be curious. Just start.
