Toronto’s Church–Wellesley neighbourhood, often called “The Village,” grew from a quiet residential area in the 19th century into the heart of the city’s 2SLGBTQ+ community by the 1970s. Centered around Church Street and Wellesley Street, it became a hub for activism, culture, and nightlife, especially following key moments like the 1971 We Demand Rally and the rise of Toronto Pride. Today, it remains a vibrant symbol of inclusion, resilience, and community in Toronto.

This summer, between June 18th to August 21st, Church Street between Wellesley and Alexander will be closed to through traffic as part of a pilot project to create a more pedestrian-friendly space in the heart of the Church-Wellesley Village. The initiative will support local businesses, create safer and more accessible public space, and celebrate the Village’s rich cultural and 2SLGBTQ+ heritage.
