✨ Meet Lauren Huffman Morris, one of Propeller Art Gallery’s talented artist members!

Lauren Huffman Morris is an emerging, self-taught art photographer based in Toronto. Her predominately B&W photography is inspired by daytime and nocturnal walks in Toronto and other cities, especially Montreal and Washington, DC to date; city architecture and industrial sites; film noir and crime fiction; the paintings of Edward Hopper and George Bellows; and the photography of Berenice Abbott and Edward Weston, among others. Lauren’s work has appeared in over 30 group exhibitions, including several at Propeller as well as at Northern Contemporary Gallery,  Arts Etobicoke and Twist Gallery in Toronto. Lauren has also exhibited in juried shows with Black Box Gallery in Portland, Oregon, and Decode Gallery in Tucson, Arizona. At present, a number of her photographs (and a few paintings) are in the hands of private collectors in Toronto

🖼 Flight Lexicon by Lise Melhorn-Boe, part of our current exhibition "Looks Good on Paper..." | Guest Curated by Nancy Jacobi

"I have been making artist’s books for forty-five years. Through a feminist lens, I have examined issues in contemporary women’s lives as well as environmental health concerns. My current body of work consists of textile books examining women’s lives through poetry and textiles. I have been challenging myself to use textiles to make book structures which are commonly made in paper.

When I saw the Call for this exhibition, I realized I would have to create something new. “Flight Lexicon” is a pop-up book inspired by a children’s poetry book entitled “Hawks Kettle, Puffins Wheel And Other Poems of Birds in Flight” by Susan Vande Griek and Mark Hoffman. I am not a birder, but I love words, and was quite taken with the interesting words that are used to describe specific species’ flight patterns. I chose to translate six of these flight patterns into pop-ups. Pop-ups need a stiff paper to function properly. I had some sheets of a heavyweight handmade paper for the pages and found a few more locally. I used a stiff Fabriano paper for the structural components of the pops, then collaged lightweight Japanese, Tibetan and handmade papers to create illustrations.

✨ Meet Erica Ross, one of Propeller Art Gallery’s talented artist members!

Born and raised in Toronto in a home of art and dance, Erica is a lifelong creator with over 45 years of experience in visual, healing, and expressive arts, spanning cultures and borders.
After graduating from OCA(D) in 1977, she explored a wide range of creative pursuits, including jewelry-making, enamelling (and teaching it), clothing design, co-owning a boutique, and performing dance. Her focus later shifted to the co-creation of a women’s dance practice, and DJing dance sets.
