How many things do you regret?

Remember Ben Johnson, during the 1987–88 season he was the world's fastest man, breaking both the 100m and the 60m indoor World Records but was disqualified for doping and stripped of the gold medal; and all of the medals he had achieved while being doped between 1981 to 1988. It’s hard to say for sure, but my guess is that he regrets taking steroids.

I’m sitting there, rocking back and forth in my chair, thinking back to all the things I wanted to do and did not do. All the things I wish I had done and the things I did. I’m thinking about all the dumb things I’ve done and all the good I’ve done. I look at my kids and grandkids, hoping I’m that I’m leaving a better world for them.

Then a deep sadness overcomes me and I think about all the time I’ve wasted when I have very little time left, knowing I could have done more, achieved more, given more and helped more people. This is a future I’m working very hard to avoid, a future filled with regret.

The last thing I want to think about before I leave this planet is all the things I regret about the life I’ve led. Regret can be a heavy burden to bear, it lives with you and consumes your subconscious thoughts. Regret lives in your emotions, feelings and in your very being and can colour the rest of your life.

Right now, there are sons who regret that they did not patch their thighs up with their fathers. There are daughters, who regret that they have not spoken to their fathers for months or years. There are husbands who regret going too far with another woman. And there are wives who regret not being there for their children. Regret can take many forms.

How do you overcome this dark overwhelming feeling of regret? It will take courage on your part to come to the conclusion and realization of the inescapable fact that you can’t change the past and all you have is now.

It’s what you do now that matters, it’s the action to take now that can free you from the burden of regret. Next, take 100% responsibility without finding blame or fault. Then, get help, find a trusted listener and share what you are thinking and feeling with someone who will not judge you. Then take action

We all have a limit to how far we are willing to go before we quit and give up. The limit is determined by how much frustration, pain and suffering we can endure. I believe, that on average, women can endure more pain than men can since they have to deal with pain every month for most of their adult lives. Men on the other hand must be trained to endure pain or experience a difficult situation where there is no option to quit, they must persist and persevere, i.e. sports is a great training ground.

Many years ago, I ran a 42.2-kilometre race, it took me five hours and 43 minutes to compete. Never having run a marathon, at the halfway mark, I decided to quit, that was it for me, that as far as I was willing to go. But the crowds and the other runners motivated me to continue. Going further was outside of my comfort zone, to go any further will mean more pain, hardship and more suffering.

What I learned from that experience is when I pushed up against the walls of my comfort zone, the walls pushed back, so much that it was painful, I had to push harder until I broke through to the other side. And what did I find? Another wall to break through.

Breaking through your comfort zone is painful and difficult and comes with pain, anger and frustration. So, when you are experiencing this, you are on the right track, keep pushing, persist, and don’t give up, because every breakthrough is always preceded by a breakdown. Every goal you want to achieve is on the other side of your breakdown.
