In May, we hosted the launch of BRICK UP, the latest project by Jaime Isaac and Suzanne Morrisette of ROSEMARY GALLERY. Part of the International Ceramic Art Fair (ICAF), the work asks what artists and the public need from their art galleries of the future.

The project kicked off with a free public brick making workshop in our Community Learning Centre. The next day, the bricks were placed in the front of a collage of different art galleries across Canada. The artists performed by installing the bricks in a wall shape—printed with the ROSEMARY logo—slowly obscuring the images behind them.

BRICK UP is a project of ROSEMARY SKOOL, a Winnipeg-based initiative conceived by Isaac and Morrissette that proposes using local clays to think through land-based histories and knowledge.

See the installation now as part of ICAF 2026, on display at the Gardiner until August 16!

Aida Ali, our Senior Manager of Education, shares the fascinating story behind this blue and white porcelain "Plate with dragons." 🐉

Made in China between 250 and 350 years ago, this remarkable piece was crafted for export. How do we know? The dragon’s unique style looks less like traditional Chinese artistry and more like designs found in the Ottoman Empire and Southeast Asia.

But its journey didn't stop there. An inscription on the back reveals that around 200 years ago, it was owned by a woman in India named Fatemeh Begum, who purchased it along with another plate for just one rupee!

Eventually, this artifact found its home here in Canada at the Gardiner Museum. Every mark, inscription, and design choice tells a piece of a complex global story, connecting the people who made, loved, and preserved it across centuries.

Come see "Plate with dragons" in person in our Chinese Porcelain Gallery and uncover more global stories in our permanent collection.

A self-described "shape maker," French-Canadian artist Magalie Guérin creates sculptural works that spark curiosity, invite reflection, and encourage personal interpretation. Known mainly as a painter, Guérin began working in ceramics about five years ago. She builds each piece by hand, firing them repeatedly for particular glaze effects and to refine the forms.

Escape the Toronto heat this weekend and experience her work in person at the International Ceramic Art Fair. ICAF 2026 features some of the most exciting contemporary ceramics today by Canadian and international artists.
