Rethink Breast Cancer
Beck shares a very real aspect of navigating motherhood after breast cancer; an example of how cancer continues to impact life in the aftermath. Those impacts don’t just go away or end like people think they do — no matter how many years have passed. Thank you for sharing this, Rebecca. We hear you. 💗
“I have to stop breastfeeding my daughter — but not because I want to.
Breastfeeding as a breast cancer survivor is a complex and non-linear journey.
I can only feed from one breast, as only one produces milk.
Additionally, my breastfeeding time is limited because I’ve decided to continue my hormone therapy.
The hormone therapy I’ve been on for three years, called tamoxifen, has been accompanied by two breaks for conception, pregnancy, and breastfeeding two children.
I had finally reached a comfortable breastfeeding routine and strengthened my bond with my daughter. However, now it’s time to stop.
The harsh reality of being a cancer survivor and having no choice to continue breastfeeding is unfair and emotionally taxing.
I won’t let my past diagnosis cloud my mind with negative thoughts, but it’s a continuous journey to remain a survivor and regain my sense of normalcy.
I want to fully enjoy my family, which I’ve worked so hard to build.
I want to savor the joys of my life and the everyday blessings that surround me. I wish I could call you mum, only you would truly understand.
To anyone navigating motherhood after cancer — how do you hold onto joy on the hard days?” — Beck
