Apple’s upcoming App Tracking Transparency feature, set to launch in “early spring” of 2021, will require developers to ask users for their permission to track them across apps and websites in the form of a very obvious pop-up that you may have already seen if you own an iPhone.
Quite quickly after Apple’s announcement, Google made one too, effectively signalling the end of third-party tracking as we know it and placing greater emphasis on first-party data.
“Today, we’re making explicit that once third-party cookies are phased out, we will not build alternate identifiers to track individuals as they browse across the web, nor will we use them in our products.” - Google
These announcements aren’t surprising considering their precursors were laws and regulations that first protected EU citizens and California residents in the form of GDPR and CCPA. But what exactly are these regulations, how do they relate to the recent announcements, and what should you be doing about it as a consumer or advertiser?

These terms are very relevant today, especially with recent announcements from Apple and Google that will change the way marketers use data to track consumers across the web for the purpose of advertising.
In short, there will be greater emphasis placed on using first-party data as well as enhanced consumer privacy protections including but not limited to: more transparency into tracking and explicit consent for when and what type of data is being collected.
