Recent 2020 Canadian Cardiovascular Society Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Guidelines now include recommendations for a period of detraining and early catheter ablation as possible management strategies in individuals engaged in high-intensity long-duration endurance exercise.

Research suggests long-term high intensity endurance training has the potential to increase an athlete's risk of developing atrial fibrillation. However, more studies are needed to better define the threshold of exercise training at which, the risks outweighs the known benefits of exercise.
