TB is an infectious disease caused by bacteria spread through the air when someone with contagious TB coughs, sneezes, sings or talks. It mainly affects the lungs and airways but can also affect other parts of the body. TB is diagnosed using a combination of tests that can include:
tuberculin skin test
blood tests such as an interferon gamma release assay
Both latent TB and active TB can be treated with antibiotics

This February is a leap year, but we will still highlight Black Women who opened doors! Jeanne Martin Cissé was a prominent figure in international diplomacy, known for her dedication to promoting peace and development through her work with the United Nations (UN). She was the first woman to chair the United Nations Security Council where only 24 women representatives have ever served.
Born in Kankan, Guinea in 1926, Cissé has a background in law and international relations, which equipped her well for her career in diplomacy.
Cissé’s involvement with the United Nations spans several decades, during which she has held various key positions within the organization. She has served in roles focused on conflict resolution, human rights, and sustainable development. Her commitment to advancing the UN’s goals has earned her recognition and respect from colleagues and counterparts around the world.
One of Cissé’s notable contributions to the United Nations was her involvement in peacekeeping efforts in conflict-affected regions. She played a crucial role in negotiating and implementing peace agreements, often working in challenging environments to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation among conflicting parties.
Additionally, Jeanne Martin has been a vocal advocate for gender equality and women’s empowerment within the UN system. She has worked tirelessly to ensure that women’s voices are heard and their rights are protected in all aspects of UN activities.
Throughout her career, Jeanne Martin has demonstrated exceptional leadership, diplomacy, and a deep commitment to the principles and values of the United Nations. Her dedication to promoting peace, justice, and sustainable development has made her a respected figure in the international community.
In 2006, President George W. Bush sent a message of congratulations on Hadja Jeanne Martin Cissé’s 80th birthday, acknowledging “her courage and her work”.
Jeanne Martin moved to the the United States in 1985, where she lived in Baltimore, Maryland until 2017 when she passed away!
