LEVY: Toronto Police stats show crime surged after Roehampton shelter opened
In the three months after the Roehampton hotel shelter opened in July 2020, neighbourhood crime jumped 30% compared to the summer before.
They confirm the dramatic increase in crime as soon as the Roehampton and Broadway shelters were opened between June 1 and Sept 30, 2020.
For those who do not live in Midtown, City Council has approved a $200M+ shelter expansion in every area of the city paid for by the Federal and Provincial governments. Council approved what's known as delegated authority to the bureaucracy aka no consultation with community required. This is what happened to us.
It is notable that the Deputy Mayor was able to obtain this information in order to inform the decision of a hotel shelter in his ward.
The Deputy Mayor was able to obtain crime information in our neighbourhood that our local councillors couldn't or wouldn't get from the City or our TPS 53 Division leadership. It also confirms that certain councillors and officials had access to this information and refused to share, warn, or defend our community from a major crime wave as a direct result of City policy to impose a shelter without consultation or community supports. Midtown was collateral damage and subject to contemptuous dismissal by Councillor Matlow and other downtown councillors.
