Honing skate blades is a process that has many variables with a broad range of results.
A great sharpening is easily diminished due to a improper technique and/or tools. Everyone has their own method.

Do you use flat or teardrop?
What grit do you prefer?
Oil on stone?

With a digital microscope You could analyze some of the effects of various sharpening speeds, pressures and wheel grits for optimum results.
With each change applied to your blade sharpening process you would take a digital snapshot and notes on the sharpening process to compare results.
