The shirt >> Chief Iron Tail, also known as Sinte Maza (Lakota Sioux for "Iron Tail"), was a prominent figure and a member of the Oglala Lakota tribe. He gained widespread recognition and fame in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Chief Iron Tail is most famously known for being one of the Native American leaders who travelled with Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. He joined the show in 1885 and became one of its star attractions, showcasing his traditional Lakota regalia, skills, and culture to audiences across the United States and Europe. Chief Iron Tail's participation in the Wild West Show helped create awareness and interest in Native American culture during that time.

One of his most significant achievements was serving as one of the models for the design of the Buffalo nickel (as displayed on our hoodie), a five-cent coin that was in circulation from 1913 to 1938. The portrait of a Native American on the obverse side of the coin was said to be a composite representation of Chief Iron Tail, Chief Two Moons, and Chief John Big Tree.

We remember and celebrate Chief Iron Tail as an important figure in Native American history and the resilience, culture, and traditions of the people.

September 30th is “Orange Shirt Day” and “Truth and Reconciliation Day” in Canada.

Orange Shirt Day recognizes and remembers the experiences of Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools.

The movement originated from the story of a woman named Phyllis Webstad, who had her new orange shirt taken away from her on her first day at a residential school.

Today, Orange Shirt Day is used to raise awareness about the intergenerational impacts of the residential school system and to promote reconciliation and understanding between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

Truth and Reconciliation Day, also observed on September 30th in Canada, has a broader scope. It is a federal statutory holiday designated to recognize and remember the history and legacy of the residential school system, honor survivors and their families, and promote reconciliation efforts.

The day encourages Canadians to learn about the history, listen to survivors' stories, and engage in conversations about the impacts of colonization on Indigenous communities.
