Heat is the leading cause of weather-related deaths in Canada. Yet, ACORN's national survey of 700 tenants last year found that 44% of renters don't have AC with the most common reason being how expensive it is.

To make things worse, as of today, Doug Ford’s new air conditioning rules under Bill 97 are officially in effect. Now, if your rent includes utilities, landlords can charge extra, unproven fees for having AC.

No notice. No approval from the LTB. Just arbitrary estimates to guess your hydro usage and squeeze extra profit out of your rent check. 💸

Instead of holding landlords accountable for keeping our homes safe, Doug Ford is forcing low-income tenants to choose between heat stroke or getting behind on rent and facing eviction.

How many preventable deaths will be excused during this week's heat domes?

We're not being dramatic - tenants are literally fighting for their lives.

In 2021, when over 600 people died in BC during a heat dome (98% died indoors without adequate cooling) the government responded by committing 8,000 free AC units to low-income tenants.

If corporate landlords refuse to provide cooling, Queen's Park needs to step up and foot the bill. ACORN is demanding:

✅ Free AC units for low-to-moderate income and heat vulnerable tenants
✅ Ban landlords from charging extra fees for air conditioning to tenants who have utilities included in their rent.
✅ Immediately expand the Ontario Electricity Support Program (OESP) to fully cover any extra AC surcharges forced onto tenants.
✅ Increase the OESP hydro credit during the summer months to account for higher rates while running AC.
