Tomorrow is Red Dress Day, and we in Chinatown remember and honour Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Sprited People (MMIWG2S).

The REDress project created by Metis Artist Jaime Black in 2010 inspired the hanging of Red Dresses to honor stolen sisters from these communities.

Posters are up in and around Spadina Chinatown, in English and Chinese. Please visit, learn more about this human rights crisis happening in our country, and speak about it to your friends, families and loved ones.

I always thought history was for someone else until I found our Grandfather was one of those Head Tax payers that Canada was trying to keep out when I looked up his C.I.44 file. Any Chinese Canadian with a relative that came before 1923 likely has a C.I. 44. He came in 1903. We always knew him as Tom Wong but his real name was Wong Thick Tong aka Sack Chung. I have always felt restless unless I am busy, that chores are never done, the house is never clean enough, that idle pleasures are not for me. If you are a white Canadian you don’t need to look over your shoulder quite so often. My mother chose to not teach us Chinese but sent us to afterschool French classes. It’s all an echo from the legislated racism.

Long Time No See mounted an exhibition of stories from the Chinese Exclusion Act years, in Toronto Spadina Chinatown May-July 2024. This project is supported by The Chinese Canadian Museum (CCM) of Vancouver. CCM is also the host of The Paper Trail to the 1923 Exclusion Act, a major exhibition documenting the effects of this legislation on the Chinese community, curated by Catherine Clement.
