Sceptres struggling offence reoccurring roadblock for success

TORONTO.- Toronto has shown it has promising sequences, but its offence needs refinement.
The Toronto Sceptres were off to a disappointing start to the new calendar year after falling to the red-hot New York Sirens at home on Tuesday.

It was a scrappy start to the first, with back and forth play as the Sirens disrupted any amount of momentum made by the Sceptres.

Toronto, who is currently ranked fourth in the league, holds a 4-0-3-4 record and were the better team on the score sheet. However, New York, who are second in the standings, hold a 6-0-0-5 record and proved to be more efficient on the ice. This was mainly due to the way they played on their offensive end, something Toronto hasn’t seen in their gameplay for quite some time now.

It was especially evident in this match against their biggest rivals, where despite the great chances made up front the Sceptres would lose the disc more often than making a clean shot.

In the second period, time dripped away as inconsistent passes, turnovers, and a lack of physicality compared to New York resulted in errors and a goal by Sirens’ rookie Krystina Kaltuonkova just shy of three minutes in. Then to clean it up quickly an empty net gave them another making it 2-0 by the end of regulation.

With the loss, this is the first time the Sirens have won a game at the Coca-Cola Coliseum against the Sceptres since the PWHL began three seasons ago.

As well, these same struggles were also on display one week ago, in a matchup against the two-time Walter Cup Champions the Minnesota Frost in their 5-1 loss on home ice.

In their second match against each other in the regular season, the Sceptres made themselves known by netting an early goal made by Toronto’s leading goal scorer Daryl Watts. Watts, who leads the Sceptres with eight points in 10 games, holds double the points than all Toronto’s rookies combined.

Afterward their lack of rhythm in the offensive end allowed the Frost to take control quickly eventually scoring five of their own in the end, showing there’s a tendency for the team to rely on individuals for the points rather than a win resulting in a collective effort.

Similarly, in a Christmas Eve matchup against the Ottawa Charge, they built a solid start and a good momentum with a 3-0 lead until the end of regulation. Despite their effort to remain ahead, they let their grip loosen a bit on their structure, resulting in the Charge, who were and still are placed dead last in the league, to take the game for themselves, 4-3.

Moving forward, a possible solution could be to really work on their structure of play but most of all to make sure there is support is there before sending the puck in for a scoring chance.

The next game for the blue and gold is in Lowell, Mass., against the Fleet (6-0-1-2, 1st PWHL) on Jan. 14 before returning to Toronto on Jan. 17.
