THE OLD CAREER LADDER FOR CANADIAN ACTORS IS BREAKING. YCAA THINKS THE INDUSTRY NEEDS A NEW MAP
For a long time, the path made sense.
You trained. You got an agent. You built credits. You worked toward bigger rooms, better directors, and stronger leverage. And if you were in Canada, there was often an unspoken final step: eventually, the centre of gravity would shift south. Los Angeles was where a career became undeniable.
Jason Norris, Managing Partner at YCAA Toronto, has spent years helping Canadian actors climb that ladder. He is no longer sure it goes where anyone promised.
"The old ladder hasn't disappeared," says Norris. "It's just no longer the whole map. For a lot of actors, following it exactly the way they were taught can still leave them stuck."
What changed, Norris argues, was not talent. What changed was attention.
