The murder of Indira Gandhi

The assassination of Indira Gandhi, India’s Prime Minister, took place at 9.30 am on October 31, 1984 at her residence in Safdarjung Road, New Delhi. Gandhi was killed by two of his security guards, members of the Sikh sect, during the aftermath of Operation Blue Star, the attack carried out by the Indian army on the Golden Temple, leaving the temple heavily damaged and resulting in the death of hundreds of Sikh militants.

Gandhi was murdered by Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. Beant, who had been working as a security guard for the Prime Minister for ten years, was killed on the same day by other security guards, while Satwant was sentenced to death, being executed in January 1989. After Gandhi’s assassination, Sikhs were persecuted and killed by the revolting population, mainly Hindus, and Gandhi’s son Rajiv Gandhi took over the head of government.
