FIREWORKS, THUNDERSTORMS AND YOUR DOG

We all want our dogs to feel safe and secure during the fireworks. Here are a few to tips to help you and your dog through what can be a stressful time, especially if your dog is anxious.

This is a time when dogs may run away and bolt with the sound of fireworks. The safest place for your dog is in the house.
Do NOT leave them outside!!!!

Be sure to exercise your dog earlier in the evening.
Crate your dog.
Keep curtains closed.
Have the radio or tv on.
Stay calm and don’t get excited or loud when they are happening.
The more you make a big deal of it, the more anxious they may become.
If you and your dog are away from home, make sure they have on a collar with all your contact information.
Make sure they are wearing a collar that they cannot slip out of.
Be aware that dogs can slip backwards out of a harness when they are panicking.
Have a leash they can’t bite through such as a chain leash if you’re unsure of how they will react.
Stay calm and have the dog sit next to you. Do not have them circling and panicking all around you as this creates more chaos and confusion.
If you’re not sure how they will react, the safest place for your dog is in the home.
