I know you have probably seen ‘plant-based’ diets a million times in your google searches but here is why I don’t ascribe to that way of eating for those of us with arthritis.
Vegan diets often do not provide adequate complete protein to maintain muscle mass as we age, which is crucial to prevent further tissue breakdown and reduce the adverse effects of both aging and chronic illness.
Vegan protein sources do not contain the full spectrum of amino acids that the body needs, and they also contain toxic lectins such as prolamines and agglutinins that damage that gut lining (leading to more symptoms). Vegan protein sources also contain digestive enzyme inhibitors that interfere with the absorption of nutrients from our food (and can lead to vitamin and mineral deficiencies).
Lastly, both the elderly and the chronically ill frequently suffer from muscle wasting. This is a big deal because decreased muscle mass as we age is one of the primary drivers of death and disability in older adults.
In the Anti-Arthritis Method program, I instead focus on guiding my clients through the process of eating foods that reduce their symptoms, eliminating foods that have been secretly contributing to their pain (even healthy ones), and creating their most comprehensive diet to support their health and keep their joint pain away for the long term.
This allows you to have some control over your arthritis symptoms instead of being at the mercy of your condition.

It doesn’t come easy for me…
I sometimes get the feeling that people might think that because I teach about managing arthritis naturally, that I have everything all figured out and I don’t ever need to worry about having a flare-up anymore.
While it’s true that most days are pretty good and I have a solid plan in place to keep my health on track…
I DO need to work for it.
There are many days that I wake up and I have no desire to cook a healthy meal.
To be honest, I would much rather eat whatever I felt like at any given time, BUT…
Right now, THIS is my reality and I KNOW what it is I need to do to be at my best for myself and the people I’m closest to.
Sometimes you are not going to want to eat the foods that will keep your joint pain away.
Sometimes you are not going to batch cook and have joint-friendly meals on hand at all times.
And that’s ok, because it's not about pretending that arthritis doesn’t exist anymore…
It’s about learning and practicing, and getting better at the skills and habits that make it less and less of a problem in your life.
