Starter Motor Cutaway View ๐งโ๏ธ
This cutaway view shows the internal components that allow a starter motor to crank an engine during startup. When the ignition key is turned, the solenoid becomes energized and pulls the plunger forward. This movement activates the shift lever, pushing the drive pinion gear outward to engage the flywheel.
At the same time, the solenoid contact disc closes the electrical circuit, allowing high current to flow to the starter motor. The armature then rotates inside the magnetic field created by the field coils, producing the torque needed to crank the engine.
Key starter components:
โข Solenoid โ engages the starter drive and controls current flow
โข Plunger & shift lever โ move the pinion gear into the flywheel
โข Drive pinion โ transfers rotational force to crank the engine
โข Armature โ rotating core that produces torque
โข Field coils โ create the magnetic field for motor operation
โข Brushes โ transfer electrical current to the commutator
Understanding how these components work together helps explain the complete starter engagement process during engine startup.
