Montebello Park was purchased by the city in 1887. The land was owned by the Merritt Family, and it was William Hamilton Merritt Jr. who named it Monte Bello (beautiful mountain) in 1859.

When the foundation for the Montebello Park pavilion was laid c.1860, it was intended to be William Hamilton Merritt Jr.'s home, named Montebello Place. Though Merritt Jr.'s sudden death at age 37 meant that the house would never be built, the land was eventually purchased by the city in 1887, and the unused foundation became the Montebello Park Pavilion; a cornerstone and gathering place for the community of St. Catharines.

Come to the pavilion on Tuesday, June 16 and 23, from 7-9 pm to learn Scottish Country Dancing for free with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society!

This year, dive deeper into the history of St. Catharines to mark the city's 150th anniversary with us. Throughout 2026, be on the lookout for programs and events that celebrate this incredible milestone!
