On January 4, National Ribbon Skirt Day is celebrated in Canada. The day was inspired by Isabella Kulak, a member of the Cote First Nation in Saskatchewan, who faced ridicule for wearing a handmade ribbon skirt to school.

The purpose of this day is to recognize the importance of Indigenous culture and traditions and to celebrate the ribbon skirt as a symbol of pride, strength, and connection. The ribbon skirt represents identity, diversity, and resilience, carrying teachings and stories from generations past and present.

What does the ribbon skirt mean to you? Let us know in the comments.

I am pretty proud of myself with this Ribbon Skirt. I wanted to stitch down the 1/2 star. So I steam a seamed it first the the black bias taped was stitched down (angles) then I sewed a piece to the bottom for just in case. So next was design work. Used markers and ta da.
