If your contractor on your bathroom reno is not using one of the many waterproofing products/systems on the market, then u likely have the wrong contractor.

One of the most frequently asked quedtions I get is what method is "best" to waterproof a tiled shower or tub enclosure. There are so many products available these days that there really is no best method; but there are many options or combinations of options that will keep things dry for many years to come when applied correctly. My preference is to use cement board with waterproof strips like Kerdi Band or Redgard (or equivalent products); but kerdi-board or hardibacker also work just as well with waterproofing bands when installed over thinset.

Yes; its more work. And yes; it costs more in materials and labour. But you end up with a waterproof substrate which will stand the test of time. Be sure to always ask your contractor which method she/he will be using on your project. If the response is "you don't need that" then they are either ignorant of the benefits or just lazy. Sometimes peace of mind is money well spent.
