A recent report from The Conference Board of Canada found that 57.4% of Canadian jobs in 2024 were classified as “highly exposed” and would be affected by AI.

𝘑𝘰𝘣 𝘴𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘦𝘳𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘦 𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘦𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘱𝘴 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘴𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘯𝘦𝘹𝘵 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘰𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘵𝘺.

It is important to assess the viability of your career choice. Think through how AI can impact the field and role—view it through the lens of “will AI compete with or augment this career plan?”

For example:
• 𝗔𝗜-𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲: Medical laboratory technologist ← so this job may disappear
• 𝗔𝗜-𝗮𝘂𝗴𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲: Physicians ← AI will assist by analyzing imaging and patient data

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁...
More career opportunities will appear in AI-augmenting categories and fewer in AI-competing ones. Employers will increasingly look for workers who demonstrate adaptability, AI-literacy, creativity, critical thinking, and leadership.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼...
Focus on developing skills around human judgement, interpersonal skills, creativity, and complex problem-solving. Build a mix of domain expertise (what the job is about) and human-centric skills (communication, empathy, critical thinking, leadership), along with digital/AI literacy (how to work with technology), because those are increasingly valued. Be cautious about roles where any parts of the work are repetitive, templated, or routine, because they are at the highest risk for automation or significant change.

𝗕𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗺 𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲...
Roles requiring human interaction and connection are less likely to be replaced by AI.

𝗦𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘀...
🩺Nursing, doctors, registered nursing assistants: Core tasks still require human empathy, ethical judgment, and hands-on care.

🧰Skilled trades like electrician, millwright, sheet metal worker, plumber are AI-augmenting roles with a low probability of being replaced. Even skilled operators will remain essential in manufacturing facilities.

🧑‍💼Social workers, psychotherapists, career coaches: These rely on interpersonal connection, human insight, and judgment—skills that AI cannot replace (though it may assist).

🏋️Allied health like dietitians, physical therapists, audiologists; also early childhood education, and professions that combine human-centered care skills and technical fluency.

🧬Scientific research roles such as scientist, chemist, drug designer, pharmacology researcher, and medical science researcher are all AI-augmenting roles. They require in-depth knowledge attained through education, where professionals learn experimental techniques, develop critical thinking, interpret complex data, create experiment designs, manage ethical decision-making, and innovate solutions.

Future roles will increasingly require college (community or polytechnic) or university education, depending on your chosen path.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝗹𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗰𝗲, now is the time to embrace change, AI isn’t going anywhere, so continuous upskilling and lifelong learning will be essential.
