In 1980, jazz guitar legend Pat Martino suffered a near-fatal brain hemorrhage caused by a congenital arteriovenous malformation (AVM). Emergency surgery saved his life but required removing much of his left temporal lobe.
When he woke up, he barely recognized his parents and had completely lost his memory, including how to play the guitar.
To help him recover, his father played Martino's old records around the house. Listening to his own recordings, Martino gradually reconstructed the musical language he had once mastered.
Using his own discography as a roadmap, he spent years relearning the instrument from scratch. By 1987, he had returned to the stage and would go on to record acclaimed albums, earn Grammy nominations, and reclaim his place among the greatest jazz guitarists of all time.
A neurosurgeon later put it: "How many people get the chance to be a genius twice in one lifetime?" 🤯

Sorry about the relatively raw thumbnail, but here are my equally raw thoughts on how one can actually get better at jazz guitar (without the usual "mental gymnastics").
I’m tired of seeing players get stuck in the "dictionary trap"... memorizing every scale and mode while losing the beat four bars into Summertime. If you’ve been prepping for years but still feel like you aren't "ready" to play, this one is for you.
We’re talking:
-> Why the 80/20 rule is your best friend.
-> The "chess opening" mistake.
-> The 3 essential roles you actually need to master.
Grab an espresso and let’s get to work. Cheers!
