Bruce House

We are incredibly sad to share the news of the recent passing of our former colleague and good friend Doug Cooper.

Doug retired from Bruce House in January 2019 after 28 years. He left an indelible mark on Bruce House, shaping core beliefs and philosophies as the organization shifted from primarily providing palliative care to people dying of AIDS to caring for people living with HIV.

“Doug had been around from the beginning; he had seen Bruce House grow and expand to support people living with HIV through the various phases of need. He supported the community for almost 3 decades and many clients miss him to this day!” -Ayan Jama, Manager, Program Development and Delivery [from AGM 2019]

One of our clients came to pay her respects, and shared with us that 18 years ago Doug Cooper opened the door for her at her first visit to the office. He helped her feel safe and cared for, and that she would be ok and supported. Doug has made a lasting impact on her and so many others.

Doug moved on new a new career as a barber, fulfilling a lifelong dream and inspiring us all to believe that we can make huge life changes at any age.

Doug may no longer be with us, but there will always be a little bit of Doug Cooper in every Bruce House program.
