🪾💨 Wildfire Smoke Alert for Ottawa & Southern Ontario – Extreme Risk 🪾💨

The Canadian Wildland Fire Information System (CWFIS) has set wildfire risk to extreme across much of Southern Ontario, including Ottawa and surrounding areas. Even smoke from distant fires can seriously affect your indoor air quality.

Wildfire smoke contains fine particles (PM2.5) that can enter your home through windows, doors, cracks, and HVAC systems. These particles can cause burning eyes, runny nose, coughing, and worsen heart and lung conditions. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with asthma, COPD, or environmental sensitivities are at higher risk.

Protect Your Family – Key Guidance:
‣ Keep windows and doors closed.
‣ Set your HVAC or air conditioner to recirculate mode and close fresh air intakes.
‣ Use a portable HEPA air purifier (or a well-built DIY box fan + MERV 13 filter) in rooms where you spend the most time — run it on high.
‣ Limit outdoor activities and avoid strenuous exercise.
‣ Wear a well-fitted N95 respirator if you must go outside.
‣ Avoid indoor activities that add particles: no candles, frying food, smoking, or vacuuming without a HEPA filter.

After a smoke event: Ash and residue can linger on surfaces and in ducts. Thorough cleaning is important — especially for environmentally sensitive individuals.

If wildfire smoke has affected your home, leaving odours, residue, or poor air quality, First Response is here to help. We specialize in professional smoke & odour remediation, deep cleaning, and restoration services tailored for sensitive environments.

🛡️ Hantavirus is back in the headlines — and it’s a timely reminder for all of us here in Canada about the hidden dangers right in our own homes, cottages, and sheds.

While the recent cruise ship outbreak is travel-related and the overall public risk remains low, the everyday Canadian risk comes from something much closer to home: deer mice. These rodents (found across the country) carry hantavirus in their urine, droppings, and saliva. When you sweep, vacuum, or disturb that material — especially during spring cleaning — the virus can become airborne and be inhaled. Even a small infestation in an attic, garage, basement, or cabin can put your family at serious risk of Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, a rare but potentially severe respiratory illness.

You don’t have to handle this alone — and you definitely shouldn’t DIY it.

At First Response, we specialize in professional rodent contamination cleanup. Our certified team safely removes and disinfects urine, f***s, nesting material, and all other biohazards from indoor and outdoor spaces using hospital-grade protocols, proper containment, and HEPA filtration. No aerosols. No risk to you or your loved ones. Just a thoroughly safe, restored environment.

If you’ve found droppings, smelled that tell-tale rodent odour, or just want peace of mind before opening the cottage this season, we’re here to help.
