Gruppo Rubato Playwrights Circle
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Gruppo Rubato is looking for six Ottawa-based playwrights to participate in the Playwright’s Circle: a year-long playwriting unit for local writers that will culminate in “Ottawa New Play Weekend” in spring 2023, featuring staged readings of all the works-in-progress developed as part of the program.

The Circle will meet twice-monthly, beginning in May 2022 and run through the end of April 2023. Meetings will be a mix of in-person and virtual sessions, though we hope to gather in-person as much as possible (safely and pending any future pandemic restrictions, of course).

Participants will be committing to attend bi-weekly sessions, as well as generate writing and read the work of their colleagues between meetings.

Pending grant results, participants will receive honorariums for their time, in addition to a 4-hour rehearsal with a director and actors in advance of the public presentation.

To apply, please submit the following before April 17, 2022:

– Contact information

– Information about your proposed project: title, development history, etc.

– Statement of intent: what is your artistic process? what are your goals for the work? what are your expectations for the unit? (500 words, max)

– Writing sample: this can be the project you intend to develop as part of the Circle, or past work; we will also accept non-theatre writing (10-15 pages, max)

Artists who wish to submit in an alternative format may choose to submit a video or audio file that includes answers to the above questions. Please limit video or audio length to 5-7 minutes.
