Throwback to one of my very first gallery openings in
There I was, all dressed up in a tuxedo, attending the opening with my date Dawn and trying my best to look like a sophisticated artist.
One minute you're making coffee over a camp stove in the bush, the next you're sipping wine in a tux and discussing art with collectors. The life of a landscape painter certainly has its moments.
I still feel more comfortable in my hiking boots than formal shoes.

My latest painting,
This is a composition that had been sitting in the back of my mind for almost a year before I finally painted it. I wanted to capture that magical moment when the first light of the day reaches the foothills of the Rockies, while also telling a bit of a human story through the landscape.
It is the quintessential Alberta scene where old farm buildings, machinery that has long been retired, and the vegetation slowly reclaiming it all. Itโs a view many of us have seen while traveling west through the foothills country.
One of the things that drew me to this subject was the contrast between the warm sunlight hitting the distant hills and the cool shadows in the foreground. Those shadowed grasses were both the biggest challenge and the most enjoyable part of the painting.
I can already see this composition evolving into a much larger pieceโperhaps a six-foot-wide canvas sometime next year.
