The most important resource in building a great school wasn't curriculum or funding. It was love. That's the claim Deborah Kenny makes in The Well-Educated Child. And she has the results to back it up.

Kenny founded Harlem Village Academies, a network of charter schools in New York City. By 2007, her schools ranked number one in math in New York State and outperformed the city and state across all subjects . But she wasn't satisfied. She wanted her students, many from underprivileged backgrounds, to have the same education as kids at Sidwell Friends or Scarsdale. Not just test scores. Deep thinking. Intellectual curiosity. The ability to reason independently and appreciate beauty .

Students should be intellectually curious, knowledgeable, gracious, self-managing, and motivated . They should be able to concentrate for long periods on challenging work and lead meaningful lives .

Lessons:

1. Kids know how you feel about them.
Kenny writes that children can intuit how you feel about them, which is why she hired people who genuinely loved kids . Not just liked teaching. Actually loved the children. That's the foundation everything else is built on.

2. Deep learning requires quality thinking.
This means students become knowledgeable, sophisticated, independent thinkers . They grapple with complex problems, understand underlying concepts, and apply them to new challenges . It's not memorizing procedures. It's understanding why.

3. Agency matters as much as achievement.
Kenny defines agency as being self-directed, intrinsically motivated, driven, and persistent . Students who have agency don't wait to be told what to do. They take initiative. They persevere through challenges. They own their learning.

4. Education without ethical purpose is incomplete.
The third pillar is purpose: seeing life not as "what can I get?" but as "what am I here to contribute?" . What is my destiny? What am I here to give? . This isn't abstract. It's woven into how students are taught.

5. Assessment needs to match the vision.
Kenny is critical of test prep culture. She argues that middle school students should be reading for at least an hour a day, about fifty books per year . Instead of short passages for test practice, they should grapple with entire books. Instead of memorizing math procedures, they should solve complex problems .

The Well-Educated Child is a book about education that's really about something bigger. It's about what kind of people we want children to become. Kenny's vision is ambitious. And she's proven it's possible.

📅От 22 юни до 05 юли 2026 г. се приемат документи за кандидатстване в бакалавърските специалности в редовна форма на обучение в Техническия университет-София, Филиала в Пловдив и Факултет и колеж Сливен.

🏫В Техническия университет - София кандидат-студентите могат да избират между 40 бакалавърски специалности, разпределени в 14 факултета. Обучението е в широк спектър от професионални направления, които обхващат инженерните науки, информационните технологии, енергетиката, транспорта, управлението и педагогиката. В София университетът предлага обучение на български, английски, немски и френски език.

Във Филиала в Пловдив кандидатите могат да кандидатстват в 12 инженерни бакалавърски специалности в областта на електрониката, електротехниката, машиностроенето, транспортната, авиационната техника, автоматиката, дизайна и печатните комуникации. Филиалът предлага също обучение по специалността „Индустриален мениджмънт“, както и по „Индустриално инженерство“, която се изучава изцяло на английски език.

Инженерно-педагогическият факултет - Сливен предлага обучение в седем бакалавърски специалности в областите на компютърните и софтуерните технологии, автоматиката, електротехниката, енергетиката, машиностроенето, автомобилната техника, климатичната техника, индустриалното инженерство и педагогиката. В Колеж – Сливен се осъществява обучение за придобиване на образователно-квалификационна степен „професионален бакалавър“ в четири специалности.

✍️Документи за кандидатстване във всички факултети и изнесени звена на Technical University of Sofia могат да се подават онлайн, на място в съответното висше училище или в регионалните бюра за прием на документи.

📝Кандидатите трябва да представят оригинал на дипломата за завършено средно образование, а дипломираните след 2021 г. – и оригинал на удостоверение за завършен първи гимназиален етап. Необходимо е също попълнено заявление за кандидатстване, което може да бъде получено на място или разпечатано от интернет страницата на университета, както и сертификат за владеене на чужд език, когато такъв се изисква за съответната специалност.

Приемането на документи за кандидатстване ще продължи до 5 юли (включително). Резултатите от първото класиране ще са ясни на 6-ти юли, а от второто ще бъдат обявени на 13-ти юли 2026 г.
