5 checks before you hit Submit: (Save this for your next application.)

Before sending your next application, a short review can make a meaningful difference. Here are five checks worth running:

1. Does the cover letter reference something specific to this company that wouldn't apply elsewhere? If not, the opening is worth revisiting.

2. Does the resume include at least three achievements with numbers, percentages, or timeframes attached?

3. Read it aloud. Does it sound like you, or does it sound like a template?

4. Could this cover letter be sent to a direct competitor without changes? If so, the closing likely needs more specificity.

5. Could you speak confidently about every claim in this document in an interview?

Five checks, a couple of minutes — and potentially the difference between landing in "maybe" and landing in "yes." Save this for your next application.

What separates an application that gets an immediate "yes" from one that lands in "maybe"? We asked hiring managers directly. Here's what came up most often:

Specific, measurable achievements. "Managed a marketing team" tells a reader very little. "Led a team of six that grew organic traffic by 140% over 18 months" tells them a great deal. Numbers create credibility; vague language creates questions.

Evidence of genuine research into the company. Referencing a real initiative, product launch, or recent development shows preparation. It's still relatively rare, which is part of why it stands out.

A distinct voice. Writing that reads like a person — with some rhythm and personality — tends to be more memorable than writing that reads like a template, even when both are professional.

A cover letter with a specific reason for applying. Not "I'm excited about this opportunity," but a concrete connection between the candidate's experience and something the company is currently working on.

None of these require AI to be avoided — they require intention. Which of these tends to be hardest to get right?
