Mentorship
“All I needed was a chance.”

This story begins in the 1990s when Sandra Matos, a high school co-op student, arrived at a small marketing communications company, uncertain about her future but excited for a chance to discover what graphic design was all about. Her mentor, Roberto Carreiro, an illustrator and designer, was fresh out Sheridan College.

At the time they didn’t know it, but the mentor and mentee were about to learn lessons from their time together that continue to shape their careers to this day.

For Sandra, the chance to learn from someone with the patience to walk her through design concepts and processes was unforgettable. For Roberto, the time spent with Sandra opened his eyes to the importance and impact of sharing the lessons he learned from others.

Nearly 30 years later, the two are still in touch. Sandra is an accomplished graphic designer taking the bold step of launching her own design firm, following a similar path to Roberto, who launched Razor Creative Solutions 26 years ago. And Roberto has taken the experience that began with Sandra and turned it into a personal commitment that has made mentoring a cornerstone of his company’s culture.

“All I needed was a chance.”

As an architecture-loving high school student, Claire Joseph hoped for a chance to do her co-op placement at an architecture firm. Nothing was on offer.

“What about a graphic design studio?” her art teacher wondered. “Okay,” she said, although it didn’t seem ideal. But when creative director Roberto Carreiro welcomed Claire to the Razor Creative Solutions studio, he had a plan for her – and it wasn’t counting paperclips.

On her first day, Claire was sitting-in on client meetings, discovering the business side of design – something they didn’t teach in art class. And over the next four weeks she learned about colour theory, got hands-on experience with Photoshop and designed a personal brand image with mentoring and guidance from the Razor team.

Today, in her final year of high school and with university applications on the horizon, Claire is applying the skills she learned at Razor to elevate her art projects and build a design-savvy portfolio to present to architecture schools.
All she needed was a chance, and she got it at Razor.

“All I needed was a chance.”

Looking back at the day he arrived at a digital production house as a 17-year-old high school student on a co-op placement, Roberto Carreiro understands that all he needed was a chance. By the time his placement ended, he understood what it took to turn his love of design into actual creative… knew how to edit pitch reels and develop stop-motion animation… and probably held the company record for the most coffee runs, ever.

The experience helped him land a spot in a college design program, and that came with an internship at a marketing communications company that led, in turn, to his first full-time job.

Today, Roberto Carreiro is the founder and creative director of Razor Creative Solutions. Razor welcomes design students with co-op placements and internships, and is an active supporter of youth mentoring through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel | York . Because Roberto hasn’t forgotten the value of mentorship and the importance of being given a chance.
