10 years ago my mom sold the first home she ever owned. It was a huge deal and she worked so hard her whole life to get to this moment. When they were planning for the open house, she had the idea for me to put my artwork up for sale around the house so everyone coming to see the house could also see my work and buy it. The open house came and went and no one bought my work - except her real estate agent. He bought a few pieces and at the same time my mom sold her house. I will never ever forget that my mom was more excited about my measly art sale than the biggest sale of her life. At the time, it meant a lot to me a child. Now, it means the world to me as a mother. After my daughter exhibited her artwork at 2 and 3 years old, that whole experience came to mind and I called my mom to tell her I finally understand exactly how she felt. Motherhood is hard af but there is no joy like a mother’s joy. There’s no joy like seeing your child thrive and get opportunities to shine. The joy of Dalia’s work being recognized felt 10 times greater than my own. I pray for children all around the world to have the chance to learn, play, experiment and create.
