Let’s talk about henna fellow stylists. A lot of us will cringe when we have a guest who comes in asking for any kind of colour when the have henna in their hair. It’s up to us to educate our guests on what we can realistically do. Does henna affect how our colour will turn out? Absolutely. But by doing a thorough consultation we can determine what kinds of colours we can do. With this guest, she wanted be sure that it absolutely could not be lifted out and was willing to sacrifice a small sliver of hair to see what would happen. Well, the foil swelled and the hair that was in it fried. We also did a test to see how much we could neutralize this colour. The result was less than desirable there too as it came out dark and muddy, even though we formulated at a lighter level. The only option left was to work with what was going to reflect through the henna stain. So I formulated a more natural tone, knowing that it would come out warmer because of the henna. The result was the beautiful brown colour that has shine and vitality. So stylists, when a guest calls and says they have henna, don’t be afraid to have a thorough consultation and do a few test strands. Take a stance of growth and education. You’ll be glad you did!

You gotta see this! I’ll be the first to tell someone that getting a light ash blonde likely won’t happen if you’ve been box dying your hair. And such was the case with this service. We went in with low expectations, prepared to work with whatever was left in the hair. To our surprise the hair lifted to a light blond while still reflecting a little warmth, enough that I could tone out what was there and use a permanent colour to lift her natural base up a level. All in all, a successful colour transformation.

What a transformation. She came in hating the highlight placement that was done and I took the lead in fixing what had been done (by someone I don’t know). To fix this up and create highlights that didn’t get lost in hair I took the existing weave and made each highlighted piece thicker, adding where needed and using a lowlight in areas that were sliced improperly. Up top I followed the hairline once again adding highlights where there wasn’t enough, and breaking up thick, unwanted slices with a lowlight. For a toner, I went in with a dark ash blonde toner at the base and blended that out to a medium/light ash blonde using a root smudge technique. It was definitely worth the time spent on it and the confidence that the client gets to leave with is priceless 👄 I did forget to turn off the main front light for the picture but you can see a glimpse of in the natural light on the right side haha! Swipe for the before!

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT TIME!!!! Soooo as of July 24th, Studio Phoenix Hair Salon will no longer be in operation and I will be continuing to do hair at Fortelli Salon and Spa located at 6750 Winston Churchill Blvd in Mississauga. I’m joining the team as a senior colourist and salon level stylist. Changing along with this are my hours and pricing. I will be available on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays starting on the 24th. It’s been a fun road and sometimes, what you think you wanted isn’t what you wanted at all. I’ve missed the joy of having a team to work alongside of and the growth that can only happen in a team atmosphere. It’s my hope that those of you who’ve stuck by me all this time will continue to support my career and growth and it’s also my hope that I’ll meet many new faces as I continue to sharpen my skills in the field. Thank you for your continued support.
