👶 CPR Guidelines Have Changed for Infants
If you took a CPR course several years ago, you may have learned to perform infant chest compressions using two fingers.
According to the latest pediatric resuscitation recommendations, the traditional two-finger technique is no longer the preferred method for infant CPR.
Why?
Research has shown that alternative compression techniques are more likely to achieve the depth needed to effectively circulate blood during cardiac arrest.
Current recommendations emphasize:
✅ High-quality chest compressions
✅ Effective ventilations
✅ Minimal interruptions
✅ Early AED use
✅ Compression depth of approximately 4 cm (1.5 inches)
✅ Compression rate of 100–120 compressions per minute
For infant choking emergencies, the guidance remains the same:
✔ 5 back blows
✔ 5 chest thrusts
❌ No abdominal thrusts (Heimlich maneuver) for infants under one year of age
The biggest takeaway?
Emergency care guidelines continue to evolve as new research becomes available. That's why regular recertification and ongoing training are so important.
The skills that save lives today may look different than the skills taught a decade ago.
