This workshop is sponsored by the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA) and will feature instruction by numismatic expert Robert Forbes. Following the introduction, this course delves deeper into the technical aspects of coin grading, as well as counterfeit and alteration detection. Though not a pre-requisite, some basic knowledge of grading terminology and the normal grading scale would be useful. This course has the goal of educating collectors about the technical side of grading Canadian coins, as well as the “market grading” approach to coin grading, and the use of third party grading services. Mr. Forbes will proceed with a PowerPoint presentation, hand-outs and displays of relevant numismatic items. The class size is deliberately kept small, helping the students to have an opportunity to interface, one-on-one, with the instructor to either understand the material presented more clearly or to deal with other issues of interest to the student in the instructor’s areas of expertise. Paul Johnson, RCNA Executive Secretary, will be the Moderator for the workshop. Each participant will receive a special RCNA Certificate of Participation at the conclusion of the course. The day-long course will include 45 minutes for lunch. Participants can dine in the Humber College restaurant (the cost for lunch is the responsibility of each individual). Morning and afternoon coffee breaks are also scheduled with complimentary coffee and tea available.
