Refinancing your mortgage is a personal decision that only you can make. People might choose to refinance their mortgage to obtain a lower interest rate, consolidate debt, change their mortgage type, or access home equity.

When you choose to refinance, you are essentially paying off your current mortgage with a new mortgage. If you can find a lower interest rate, refinancing can be a tool to save you more money over time.

If you are looking to tap into your home equity, evaluate your reasoning for doing so and ensure it is for a purchase that will benefit you in the long run like a home renovation and not to purchase depreciating assets.

You will also need to consider the penalty for ending your current mortgage. Many mortgages come with a penalty for ending the contract early. Ensure that this cost will not outweigh the long-term savings.
