The CCMA® joins the Canadian music community in mourning the passing of Tommy Hunter, one of the most influential and beloved figures in the history of Canadian country music.

Known to generations of Canadians as “Canada’s Country Gentleman,” Tommy Hunter devoted his life to elevating country music and bringing it into homes across the country with warmth, authenticity, and an unwavering respect for both the music and its audience. Through his extraordinary career as a performer, broadcaster, and ambassador for Canadian artists, he helped define the identity of Canadian country music and inspired generations of performers who followed in his footsteps.

For 27 years, The Tommy Hunter Show set the standard for country music programming, becoming the longest-running weekly television show of its kind in the world. At a time when few national platforms existed for country artists, Tommy created a stage that showcased Canadian talent alongside many of the genre’s biggest international stars. His commitment to excellence, his belief in presenting country music with dignity and professionalism, and his generosity in championing emerging artists helped build the foundation upon which Canada’s country music industry continues to thrive today.

The CCMA was proud to recognize Tommy’s extraordinary contributions with his induction into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame in 1984, an honour that reflects his lasting impact on our genre and our community. His remarkable career was further recognized through his appointment to the Order of Canada and the Order of Ontario, along with numerous lifetime achievement honours celebrating a lifetime dedicated to Canadian music and public service.

On behalf of the CCMA, we extend our deepest condolences to Tommy’s family, friends, colleagues, and the countless fans whose lives he touched throughout an extraordinary career.

Tommy Hunter’s legacy is woven into the fabric of Canadian country music. His influence lives on in the artists he inspired, the audiences he brought together, and the enduring spirit of a genre he helped elevate for generations.

He will be deeply missed and remembered forever.
