Did you know that the modern-day seatbelt was invented in 1959?

Before this, all automobiles utilized a 2-point, lap-belt system. This style of seatbelt did not fully protect the driver and passengers as their upper bodies were not properly secured.

Because of this, in 1958 Volvo hired Nils Bohlin, a Swedish engineer, to design an updated version of this safety feature. Bohlin quickly created the 3-point seatbelt system. With 3 points of contact, this variation better protected both the upper and lower body of the driver and passengers.

Over 60 years later, this design is still used within almost every vehicle driven throughout the world. Next time you get behind the wheel, make sure you are buckled up to guarantee your safety!
