Compost: Black gold for the garden

What makes compost so good for the garden? Microscopic bacteria and other tiny organisms continually eat and digest organic material releasing the nutrients plants need.
This natural process of decomposition and biodegrading is the science behind making compost.

You can make your own by layering leaves, grass clippings and kitchen scraps. This takes time – up to 3 years. If you don’t have the time, space or patience, you can also buy good ready-to-use commercially produced compost.

Compost is a great top dressing around annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. When growing new plants, add compost to the bottom of the planting hole to give fragile roots a fertile breeding ground. Add a layer to your vegetable garden every year to replenish soil and mix it into your container gardens or hanging baskets too. Compost also works wonders in sandy soil that won’t hold moisture or use it to lighten up the texture of clay soil.

In other words, compost is a great prescription for helping to build a healthy garden from the ground up.
