I walked out to the circle in the bottom of the last inning.

Top of the order was coming back around for their third at-bat.

We were up 2. Two outs.

And before I even got there, I could see it all over Maddie’s face.

She was uncomfortable.

She looked at me and said, “Please take me out. This girl has been on me all game. Can we make a change?”

And I looked right back at her and said,

“Nope.

Sorry kid, but this is your game to win or lose.”

No bailout.

No rescue mission.

No one is coming to save you.

Just you and the moment.

Take a breath.

Now go attack.

Because here’s the truth—we spend so much time trying to protect our kids from uncomfortable situations when the uncomfortable situations are exactly what make them.

Confidence isn’t built when everything is going your way.

It’s built when your heart is racing, your legs feel heavy, your brain is screaming at you to run, and you stay in the fight anyway.
