I can’t put into words how grateful I am that my husband is still here.

The day Lane went into cardiac arrest, it was nothing short of a miracle that Dylan Clarke — our real-life CPR hero — happened to be passing by just as he collapsed. He kept him alive until the paramedics arrived and were able to restart his heart with a defibrillator.

At St. Mary’s, he received an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD), and that little device has saved his life many times since.

For years we didn’t understand why this had happened. Lane’s dad, Dave, died at 30 when Lane was only five, and we now know it was the same genetic condition. Because of the incredible medical team who cared for Lane and helped us understand, we were able to share that knowledge with the family. His sister — who has the same gene — got her own ICD a few years ago, and it saved her life too.

When I think about all the moments that had to line up — a stranger who knew CPR, first responders, the hospital, the technology, the doctors who kept searching for answers — it honestly takes my breath away.

We are so, so lucky to live where we do and to have access to this kind of care.
