Yesterday and today, many parts of the province are experiencing thundershowers with lightning after a few days of warm, dry conditions. On Sunday alone there were 597 lightning strikes in the Southeast Fire Centre, though these were mostly the result of convective activity and accompanied by heavy precipitation.
When lightning strikes in an area that has experienced hot and dry conditions, the amount of accompanying precipitation affects how quickly any resulting ignition will be visible to the public. Ignition points with minimal or no rain can grow quickly into wildfires.
In areas with damper conditions, a lightning strike may cause ignition but not immediately grow into a significant fire. A small amount of fire can remain underground or smoulder in logs or other heavier fuels for several days, or even weeks, depending on fuel moisture. Then as the weather dries out and heats up, these hot spots can flare up to become full-fledged wildfires.
Lightning is the leading cause of wildfire during the summer months. Our latest ten-year average tells us that 35.3% of wildfires are human-caused, while lightning is responsible for 64.7%.
With more lightning in the forecast today, we ask that everyone exercise caution and continue to report new wildfire starts by calling 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your mobile device, or by using the Report function in the BC Wildfire mobile app.
