Meet Sheila – A Gentle Soul Discovering the World

Sheila is a 5-year-old miniature dachshund with the sweetest, softest personality you could imagine. After spending the first part of her life as a breeding mama, she’s just beginning to experience what it truly means to be a loved family companion—and watching her discover the world is something really special.

Sheila is a gentle, quiet girl who finds comfort in simple things—like her cozy “safe spot” on the living room couch, where she loves to relax and observe her surroundings. Everything is still new to her, so she thrives in a calm, patient home that will give her the time and reassurance she needs to continue building confidence.

At night, Sheila’s loving nature really shines—she prefers to sleep in bed close to her foster family, where she feels safe, secure, and part of the pack.

Sheila appears to be house-trained and knows that outdoor time is for bathroom breaks, though she hasn’t yet mastered how to ask to go outside. A home with a securely fenced yard would be ideal to help set her up for success with regular potty breaks. She enjoys her walks and has recently started learning that walks are another opportunity to do her business, and she’s making great progress.

Sheila does have occasional mild urinary leakage, typically after long periods of rest. Veterinary testing has ruled out any underlying medical concerns, and this is believed to be related to having had multiple litters and being spayed later in life. The leaking is infrequent, and she can often go extended periods without any issues. It does not impact her quality of life and is simply something her future family should be aware of.

Sheila would prefer to have another small, friendly dog in the home. She looks to other dogs for reassurance and blossoms when she has a calm canine companion by her side. She’s good with small dogs but can feel nervous around larger ones.

As Sheila has become more comfortable in her foster home, we’ve seen her personality continue to emerge. She can be a little vocal on walks and occasionally bark if startled by unfamiliar people or when other dogs approach unexpectedly. This appears to be fear-based rather than aggressive behaviour, and with reassurance and guidance, she settles quickly and does very well. A patient family willing to continue building her confidence will help her thrive.

Because of her little dachshund legs and long back, stairs and jumping are not safe for Sheila. She’ll need a home with minimal or no stairs, and her family should be mindful to prevent her from jumping on and off furniture to keep her safe and healthy.

Sheila is not crate trained and doesn’t enjoy being in a crate, but she does well being left to free roam. She can be a bit vocal when left alone, so a home that can continue to work with her gently on building confidence and routine would be ideal. Because of this, apartment/condo living or a home with shared walls would not be the best fit.

Sheila is truly a special little dog with so much love to give. With patience, understanding, and a furry friend by her side, she will continue to blossom into the devoted companion she was always meant to be.
