Artwork by Santee Smith unveiled in new Obama Presidential Center 06/22/2026

The newly-opened Obama Presidential Center includes a very special piece of art made by McMaster’s Chancellor Emeritus and alumna, Santee Smith.

Smith, who served as McMaster’s Chancellor from 2019 to 2025, is an internationally renowned multidisciplinary artist, choreographer and pottery designer.

She created a pottery vessel that will sit in the Oval Office exhibit of the newly built Obama Presidential Center and Library.

The vessel is a replica of a piece made by Smith’s father, Steve Smith, which was displayed in the real Oval Office throughout Barack Obama’s presidency.

McMaster researcher’s latest antibiotic discovery offers new way to kill drug-resistant bacteria 06/03/2026

Researchers at McMaster University have discovered a new antibiotic that kills some of the world’s most dangerous and drug-resistant bacteria — and does so by targeting a previously unknown vulnerability, opening the door to an entirely new class of treatments.

The new compound, called manikomycin, was identified by a team led by McMaster Professor Gerry Wright and has shown early effectiveness against priority pathogens including Salmonella, E. coli and Klebsiella.

“Not a single antibiotic prescribed in clinics today does what manikomycin does,” says Wright, a member of the Michael G. DeGroote Institute of Infectious Disease Research. “Not azithromycin, not tetracycline — none of them.”
