HOW CONDITIONAL IS YOUR LOVE FOR YOUR PET? LET’S BE HONEST…

Anyone who has loved an animal knows how fully they give their hearts to us.

They meet us at the door no matter when we get home. They sit on our lap or lie at our feet, contentedly, as we ignore them and watch our favourite TV show.

They seek out our attention and affection, even when we snap at them or push them away for their naughty behaviour.

They love us unconditionally.

They love us with our flaws and our moods and our often-unrealistic expectations.

Then they show us this love in so many ways, so many times.

Such a special gift they give, with their unwavering love.

THE QUESTION IS, DO WE LOVE THEM UNCONDITIONALLY?

Before you say, “yes, of course!”, consider these questions:

-How do I feel when they don’t match my pet parenting dream?

-What happens when their personality is not a fit with mine?

-How do I react when their behaviour is chronically challenging or irritating?

-What do I do when they are old or sick and I am giving more than receiving?

In my intuitive and coaching work with pet parents, this aspect of our relationship with our animals often comes up.

I help people reconnect with their deep love for their pets by acknowledging the conditions of their love and working through the barriers so they can have that special, happy, and loving relationship they've always dreamed of.

How conditional do you think your love is? Let me know in the comments.

DID YOUR PET CHOOSE YOU?

I often hear loving pet parents say that their dog or cat (or another pet) chose them, and I think, how cool is that? 🥳

What’s interesting for me is that these people don’t hesitate. They don’t wonder how this happened, and they don’t mind others knowing about it.

In fact, they usually tell me their story and the “magic moments” in detail, and I love hearing every word of it. Sometimes, I even need Kleenex (seriously).

As an INTUITIVE ANIMAL COMMUNICATOR, this “being chosen” by our pets makes sense to me.

How about you?

Ask yourself these questions…

-Have you ever met someone for the first time and had an instant physical or emotional response to them even before you have spoken?

-Have you ever felt pulled to go somewhere, or to do something you don’t normally do, and then found that what/who you needed or wanted was there?

-Have you ever had a “good feeling” or a “bad feeling” about something, listened to it, and then been grateful that you did?

Even if you don’t say so out loud, I am guessing that most of you answered yes to these questions.

This is our energy, our intuition, our 6th sense, our “gift”, whatever you want to call it. We all have it. We all use it. Some of us are just more conscious of it than others.

As animal lovers and pet parents, I believe this is the main way we communicate with our animals, and they with us. Animals are highly intuitive, and they read us well. They know what we need.

So, it is not a big surprise that loving pet parents so often say that their dog or cat (or another animal) chose them, or that they just “knew” that this was “the one” for them.

And how lucky we all are to be chosen by our special, incredible pets. The adventures. The friendship. The lessons. The joy. The love. Even the heartache.

I’d love to know in comments if you were chosen by your pet, and if this resonates with you.

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

What is your understanding of this statement?

When I think of it, the first thing that comes to mind is “don’t poke the bear” and don’t stir up trouble. Whatever the situation is, let it stay as it is since changing it in any way is likely to have a bad outcome.

Since I am a dog lover, like most of you I imagine, I also find myself thinking about how this expression came about and literally, why should sleeping dogs lie? Or should they?

I am of two minds on this one, from a practical standpoint.

First, dogs need a lot of rest, a lot of sleep. They need much more quiet, calm time than most people think. If you want to guess at how much, feel free to think of a number in your mind (3 hours, 10 hours, more?), then check the answer at the bottom of this post.

Like us, dogs who are over tired may be more reactive, less calm, more worried about the world around them, and generally less fun to be around.

Second, far too many dogs today are overweight, under exercised, and under stimulated. So, while they do need a lot of rest and sleep, perhaps it is time to stop letting sleeping dogs lie quite as much as we do, and get them outdoors to walk, play, run, or whatever works for you and your dog.

Like us, lack of exercise and fresh air for the dog can lead to health problems, behavioural issues, and a shorter life span as well as potentially higher medical bills and stress levels for you.

Though I can think of several other reasons why we should and should not let sleeping dogs lie, these two examples make a case for both sides.

So perhaps it is not a question of either/or but rather, let’s find ways to give our dogs both the quiet and rest they need and still provide them with plenty of activity and stimulation.

In the end, this is better for them, for us, and for our relationship with them.

If you’d like ideas on how to build in more rest and more activity in your dog’s life, send me a personal message and I can help you with that.

I’d also love to know in the comments what your thoughts are about the idea of “letting sleeping dogs lie.

Tracey

PS the answer to the question about how much rest a dog needs, is about 20 hours a day.
